They say everything’s bigger in Texas but some things in New York are pretty big too! Among them, Macy’s Department store!! When it comes to New York City shopping, no name is more iconic than Macy’s Herald Square. The nationwide retailer’s flagship, a prime NYC attraction, is enormous. It occupies nearly an entire city block and is filled with covetable items—making it one of the world’s largest and most inviting department stores. The business began in 1858 as a dry goods store, located at 14th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. As it expanded to include more varied merchandise, Macy’s store outgrew its original building and moved uptown in 1902 to 34th Street and Broadway, where it remains today. Macys 34th Street is still one of NYC’s premier destinations for luxury shopping, affordable finds, dining and events.

Here are some must-have experiences at Macy’s Manhattan:

Luxury shopping

For fashionistas, the store is an epicenter of style. The main floor Luxury Hall devotes its gigantic space to brands like Gucci, Burberry and Longchamp. Shoppers can further explore rows of trendy makeup and skin-care brands alongside men’s and women’s fragrances. The second floor is given over to shoes—nearly 39,000 square feet of total shoe heaven!

My Stylist

The depth of options at Macy’s Herald Square is nearly endless, which means it can be a challenge to choose items. Cue My Stylist, a free service offered exclusively by Macys NYC to help shoppers find the perfect outfit or gift. The best part? There’s no minimum purchase necessary for this consultation.

After a long day of shopping, dine in style with a range of gourmet food options. Take in sweeping views of Broadway and the Empire State Building at Italian eatery Stella 34 Trattoria. For upscale classics try American gastropub Rowland’s Bar & Grill; those in the mood for more casual fare can try the four parked food trucks on Chef Street, featuring ramen, burgers, Latin-inspired dishes and wings. Grab-and-go options include Juice Press, Pinkberry, the third-floor pizza bar and Starbucks.

The NYC & Company Visitor Center

Located on the mezzanine level, the Official NYC Information Center is outfitted with touchscreen kiosks with information in multiple languages to help visitors plan their trips. Guests can get the latest news on special events, promotions and merchandise available at Macys Manhattan, not to mention a 10 percent off coupon.

Annual events

Every year, Macy’s puts on some of New York City’s most spectacular events. The Thanksgiving Day Parade marks the unofficial start of the holiday season. (The parade began in 1924 by Macy’s immigrant employees seeking to celebrate American customs.) Soon after, visitors and locals gather around to view its dazzling holiday window displays. Macy’s was the first department store to feature holiday window displays, which started in 1864 when the store installed lighted window displays to catch the attention of passersby. During the spring, the annual Macy’s Flower Show delights visitors with millions of live flowers, plants and trees from around the globe. And come summer, Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks light up the skyline with a dazzling display launched from barges on NYC’s waterways.

Macys store hours: M-F 10am-10pm, Sat 10am-11pm and Sun 10am-9pm
